Dear colleagues,

I am so excited to share with you the great news, as I am sure most of you have heard, that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today to three dynamic women leaders who have stood up for peace and democracy: Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen.

This is terrific news that is being celebrated around the world. And it sends a strong message that the 21st century will be the century for women and girls.

This announcement should inspire us even more as we support the courageous women and girls who are taking a stand and demanding that their voices are heard as they blaze a new future for themselves and their countries.

I congratulate you all because this announcement builds on the work that you have been doing, in the areas of women,  peace and security; in women’s participation and leadership; in supporting women demanding democracy in the Arab spring and around the world, and all areas of our work at UN Women.

I have already issued a statement applauding the Nobel Peace Prize announcement, and we can take pride in the fact that the UN Secretary-General recognized the importance of UN Women in his own statement. In reaffirming the determination of the United Nations to advance the cause of women, he said: “That is why we created a dynamic new UN agency, UN Women – to drive this change.”

As we celebrate today’s announcement and take pride in our work and what we do, let us go forward with an even stronger determination to bring  change for women and girls around the world.

Warm regards,
Michelle Bachelet
